The trainee program is an option which merits careful examination by Americans who have not yet reached the age of 35, as the administrative hurdles are significantly less than those over that age. This is due to the Fact that the United States and Canada have negotiated with France particularly favorable reciprocal bilateral agreement relating to trainees.

For example, whereas the minimum salary for a corporate transferee or new hire by a French company is at least € 3,900  per month, the minimum salary for the trainee is about € 3,900 per month.

This option is especially advantageous to persons just finishing an American or French institution of higher learning and wishing to have a French corporate work experience. The authorization is normally for 12 months and can usually be renewed for an additional 6 months.

Towards the end of the training period, if the trainee wishes to remain in France, he will need to qualify under one of the other available programs. But, by then, he may well have a stronger dossier.

If you read French, the visa application forms for both short and long-term visits and check lists of documents that may be required for various categories of visas are available at http://www.diplomatie.fr/venir/visas/
